Posted On 08 Dec 2011

This afternoon, National Assembly refused to lift the parliamentary immunity of Assembly Galo Lara and did not authorize the initiation of the criminal case against the legislator, against the application filed by Ximena Ponce, Minister of Economic and Social Inclusion.

Of the 124 assembly members present, 51 voted in favor and 71 voted against lifting the immunity from Lara. The two remaining assembly members abstained from voting. In a reconsideration of the vote, the order took 51 votes in favor, 70 against, 1 abstention and 1 blank.

Fernando Cordero, head of the Assembly, said he would vote to lift the immunity of Lara, in the case of a lawsuit filed by the president.
