Posted On 24 Apr 2014
The possibility of lower the prices of drugs through the new Organic Health Code, is analysed by the Commission that deals with this subject in the Assembly.
Assemblywoman Maria José Carrión (AP) believes necessary to regulate the distribution companies of medications that also produce, import and sell,`implying unfair competition´, she mentions.
According to Claudio Galarza, Manager of the Public Company of Drugs (Enfarma EP), the 70% of drugs that must be purchased with prescription are sold without it and this generates distortions in the market. Furthermore, 93.5% of medicines in the Ecuador are brand-name and the rest generic, when in other countries the opposite happens.
Carrion also added that it is necessary to discuss why there is so much variation in prices on drugs of a single kind.
The President of the Commission, Carlos Velasco (AP), said that will be create a Subcommittee to discuss the subject of drugs within the code.
