ATPDEA seems increasingly distant
The head of the Economic and Commercial Section of the Embassy of the United States, Nicole Weber, during her presentation at the Assembly of Members of the Ecuadorian-American Chamber of Commerce, ensured that “the renewal of the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (…) unless Congress renews the agreement, which will expire on July 31 (40 days). “” The renovation seems increasingly less possible, “she added.
However, Weber said that “regardless of what happens to the ATPDEA, the views of the U.S. government is that we would like to have more open trade with Ecuador.”
Weber recalled that the country maintains a process to enter three of its products to the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) thus not losing the tariff benefits.
The three products are: frozen vegetable group (broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus), cut roses and preserved artichokes. “Now we are waiting for an announcement later this month. President (Barack Obama) will make an announcement about the products that are added to the GSP, “said Weber.
