Banana Producers Meet with the Government

Banana producers of Guayas, El Oro and Los Rios provinces, met Monday with the Ecuadorian Vice President Lenin Moreno, to discuss the crisis in that sector.

At the meeting, representatives of various associations of producers asked to maintain the official price of the banana crate which is $ 5.50.

Eduardo Ledesma, executive director of the Association of Ecuadorian Banana Exporters (AEBE – its Spanish acronym) emphasized that the sector unit is solid, but asked to sanction and suspend the export of companies that ask for change, and those that do not meet the official price.

“I believe we all together with the Government can fight against the crisis,” said Ledesma.

Ledesma said that during the meeting with the Deputy President it was confirmed the need to reduce volumes. The exporters also claimed the resumption of negotiations with the European Union, in order to place the fruit in those markets.
