Banana unions of the Andean area demand a better treatment
“Social protection in the agroindustry of the Andean region.” With that slogan banana trade union organizations from Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador analyzed their problems last week in Guayaquil.
Unions, federations, confederations gathered within the framework of the Third Regional Meeting where they requested the necessary measures to solve the problems of health, unemployment, environment and the “constant violation of freedom of association and especially the outsourcing of employment contracts” in the countries of the region that produce the fruit.
“Freedom of association is still unknown by companies and states. Yellow unions that supersede the claims of genuine unions are created,” representatives of the unions said during the conclusions of the event.
According to the document, states are “breaching fundamental rights established in the conventions and recommendations of the International Labour Organization as well as the different ethical tribunals that order the fulfillment of the minimum labor rights stipulated in free trade treaties.”
