Barcelona Says Goodbye to Bullfights
Posted On 25 Sep 2011
The Plaza Monumental of Barcelona, Spain, was the scene of the last bullfight after a campaign by activists of the rights of animals.
The last bullfight of the season was filled with spectators, tickets were sold out despite the Plaza Monumental has a 20,000 people capacity.
The ban will take effect on January first 2012. “Ban bullfighting in Catalonia is not only an attack against freedom,” said Carlos Nunez, president of Mesa del Toro. “It is the result of politics in Catalonia against the bulls and everything that seems to represent Spain,” he said.
Mesa del Toro is trying to get 500,000 signatures in hopes of persuading the national parliament in Madrid to grant the bullfights the cultural heritage status of the country.
