Border Conflict Between Costa Rica and Nicaragua
Costa Rica and Nicaragua have a border dispute for Rio San Juan, which is the border between the two countries.
Nicaragua wants to build a canal to divert the San Juan River, which according to Costa Rica, would damage the wetlands of Calero Island, that are protected since 1996 for the value of their wildlife resources.
Costa Rica has asked to the UN court of justice to order Nicaragua the withdrawal of its troops- which are in the Costa Rican border to begin the construction of a three-kilometers canal that would give landlocked to the country- because these went to the border with a wrong image of Google Maps, where the frontier was moved a few miles in favor of Nicaragua.
According to Sergio Ugalde, Costa Rican adviser, Nicaragua has flagrantly violated the international law and there is a risk that the situation threatens peace in the region.
