Atletico Mineiro and Fluminense of Brazil, Newells Old Boys and Boca Juniors in Argentina, Real Garcilasofor, Tijuana for Mexico, Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia and Olimpia of Paraguay, went to the quarterfinal stage of the Copa Libertadores, after the Olimpia defeated 2-0 to Tigre last night and Independiente 1-0 to Argentina.
On Wednesday Boca Juniors drew 1-1 with defending champion Corinthians and left him behind, because in Buenos Aires it had won 1-0. The result is considered as surprise by some experts since Boca is going through a rough time in their soccer career and it’s rival was considered a favorite to repeat the title.
Another surprise was the elimination of Nacional de Uruguay, three times champion at the hands of the young Peruvian team, Real Garcilaso.
Next week the first games for the quarterfinals will be played with the following teams: Tijuana – Atletico Mineiro, Real Garcilaso – Independiente Santa Fe; Fluminense – Olympia, and Newells Old Boys – Boca Juniors.
