British police reduces surveillance at the Ecuadorian embassy in London
British police abandoned since Monday the constant surveillance around the Ecuadorian embassy in London, while maintaining its intention to arrest Julian Assange if the leaves the building.
Surveillance was controversial, partly because it is very expensive. The Metropolitan Police said that the operation cost 11.1 million pounds (17.6 million dollars) until April 2015.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said that Assange is still subject to arrest for not responding to an accusation of rape in Sweden. Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid extradition to that European country.
“While there are no tactics to ensure success in the event that Julian Assange leaves the embassy, (the police) will deploy a series of overt and covert tactics to stop him,” the police said in the text.
