Case Diario El Universo: 3 years Prison for Carlos, César, Nicolás Pérez and Emilio Palacio

Rafael Correa’s attorney, Alembert Vera, said this afternoon he will appeal the sentence because Rafael Correa does not agree with the sentence of $40 million ruled by temporary judge, Juan Paredes. He said Correa expects to obtain the $80 million requested in the complaint.

When it lasts minutes for judge Juan Paredes to finish his charge at the court of Criminal Guarantees number 15, he read the sentence at 18:00, this Wednesday. According to the sentence Carlos, Cesar, Nicolas Perez, managers of Diario El Universo, and former opinion editor, Emilio Palacio will be 3 years in jail .

In addition, forty million dollars is the total compensation that Carlos, Cesar, Nicolas and Emilio will have to pay according to sentence ruled by the judge in favor of Rafael Correa. 10 million will be payed by company El Universo. The sentence will be appealed by the defendants.
