Chancellor confirmed the process of expanding the continental shelf

Posted On 22 Sep 2020

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gallegos , verified the progress of the technical work for the process of expanding the continental shelf , the first partial presentation of which will be held in December 2020, within the United Nations (UN) .

Chancellor confirmed the process of expanding the continental shelf

This activity was carried out within the framework of a visit he made to the facilities of the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar), where he was informed of the progress made on these works.

At Inocar , Gallegos learned about the projects carried out by the Institute on issues of national interest, such as oceanographic research , nautical cartography , security, as well as activities related to expeditions to Antarctica .

Gallegos then toured the Tsunami Warning Center , where specialized personnel from Inocar permanently monitor the seismic events on the planet that could generate a tsunami on the Ecuadorian coasts , as well as any other natural threat of oceanic origin, such as waves and events produced by El Niño or La Niña .

The Minister of Foreign Affairs took advantage of the tour to visit the research ship Orión , which will set sail on September 28 to carry out the regional oceanographic cruise, which is carried out simultaneously in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile, as part of the regional cruise program of the Permanent Commission of the South Pacific (CPPS).

The Chancellor was received with his entourage by the commander general of the Ecuadorian Navy, Darwin Jarrín; and by officials of the Inocar.
