Chevron rejects the rectification of the sentence for the victims
The lawyers of those workers affected by pollution in the Amazon rain forest, caused by the oil company Chevron, showed their satisfaction regarding the decision of the Chamber of Civil and commercial law of the National Court of Justice to ratify the sentence for environmental damage against the oil company.
Although they are not very happy with the fact that the judges pointed out that the not rendering of a public apology to those affected as determined by the Court of Sucumbios in 2011, was not mandatory as well as the payment.
For this reason, the compensation which Chevron must cancel will not be of $19 billion, but $8 646 million, plus a 10% of the environmental management act for services on behalf of the front for the defense of the Amazon.
However, the U.S. company Chevron considers “illegitimate” the judgment against them, despite the fact that the compensation was reduced to half.
“The judgment of Lago Agrio is as illegitimate and unenforceable today as the day it was issued almost three years ago,” said the Advisor of Chevron communication for Latin America, James Craig.
