CNE refuses SUMA signature review
QUITO, Ecuador
The National Electoral Council (CNE for its Spanish acronym) refused the request made by the Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE for its Spanish acronym) to revise and verify the 6300 signatures submitted by the Sociedad Unida Mas Accion movement (SUMA).
Sergio Vasconez, CNE legal adviser, said that the request of the Court “is not clear and does not specify the type of procedure to be done” to revise those signatures one more time.
It should be noted that SUMA was prevented from participating in the elections of February 2013 “due the failure to meet the requirement of 1.5% of support signatures to get legal status,” added Vasconez.
Mauricio Rodas, leader of the movement, outside the CNE asked himself indignantly, “Why the Council is so afraid that does not allow our participation in the upcoming elections?” (MZ)
