Community members complain on mining activities
About 25 people from Amazon Community Social Action Cordillera del Condor Mirador (Cascomi for its Spanish acronym), in the Tundayme parish in Zamora Chinchipe, conducted yesterday a sit-in at the facilities of the Agency for Mining Regulation and Control (Arcom) to demand the suspension of the Mirador project, concessioned to the EcuaCorriente SA company.
Carrying signs and shouting against mining, Cascomi community members and leaders of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) persisted in denouncing an alleged violent eviction, last September 30.
The CONAIE president, Jorge Herrera, announced new protests next week, because they aim to bring together community members of Zamora Chinchipe, where there are mining concessions in order to coordinate strategies to demand respect for their territories.
