Consep reports on drug trends in Ecuador
The National Council of Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Consep) exhibited on a fourth national survey on drug use in the student population, that drug use begins at age 14.3 years, in contrast with the data from a survey made on 2005.
According to the executive secretary Consep, Rodrigo Velez, the figures from 2005 showed that students were beginning to consume banned substances since the 13.8 years of age, so it can be proved that a delay in the age of consumption has been given.
The survey was conducted to 39,634 students of ages between 12 and 17, from 170 schools across 36 cities in 23 of the 24 provinces of Ecuador.
Of those surveyed only 2.30% have used marijuana on one occasion, 1.63% consume it occasionally and 1.35% use it frequently. 8 out of 10 students that use it are men.
Velez said the results of the survey were to be brought to the attention of the education authorities and Police to conduct intelligence work around schools, rather than students approach operatives.
