President Rafael Correa accused CEDATOS, the Citizen Participation Corporation and the Ecuavisa network of forming part of “a conspiracy to not accept the election results,” he said during his weekly address on April 8, broadcast from Palenque, in Los Rios province.
On the afternoon of Sunday, April 2, at 5:00 p.m., Ecuavisa reported the exit poll results of the CEDATOS polling company, which gave victory to opposition candidate Guillermo Lasso. At the same time, the government-controlled channels reported an exit poll by the Perfiles de Opinión company, according to which the winner was Lenin Moreno, of the ruling party. At 20:00, Corporación Participación Ciudadana announced the results of its rapid count: a “technical tie.”
“You can not play like that with the public faith,” Correa said, warning that “all these people are part of the fraud” and that “they must apologize for what they have done to the country.” But he repeated insistently that everyone shall respond for their acts. “The Citizen Participation Corporation allowed the uncertainty, is responsible and must respond for what it did, we can not forgive and forget, that is impunity,” he said.
Furthermore, he called the civil society organization a branch of the right and accused it of working for the Bank of Guayaquil. “The chances of Lenin’s victory with the rapid Citizen Participation count was 9 to 1 and we were not told by Citizen Participation, thus giving way to the uncertainty and the violence in the streets, Citizen Participation is co-responsible for what happens and this will not remain in impunity (…) They will have to hold responsible for their acts.”
