Correa accuses Chevron of deceiving Ecuadorian justice
Last Tuesday the president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa accused the U.S. oil company Chevron of deceiving the Ecuadorian courts, by having hired technicians to perform extrajudicial visits on key oil areas within a pollution trial.
Correa reported that inspections should be conducted by experts appointed by both sides of the controversial trial, which was raised by Ecuador’s indigenous communities and ordered Chevron to pay 9,000 million for environmental damage.
“They are scoundrels who knew they polluted, but along with their millions they want to go unpunished,” said the president.
“Chevron did pre inspections in different wells so that when the expertise in court came, they would go where there was not contaminated, trying to mislead justice,” said Correa.
