Court orders the National Police to arrest those sentenced in the Bribery case
The execution of the sentence for the 2012-2016 Bribery case was already notified on the afternoon of this Wednesday, September 23.
With this, the court of origin ordered that the National Police be notified of the location and capture of the 20 convicted of the crime of aggravated bribery, including former President Rafael Correa, who is in Belgium.
Also, María de los Ángeles Duarte, former Minister of Transportation and Public Works, who is at the Argentine embassy in Quito; as well as Walter Solís, former Secretary of Water; Vinicio Alvarado, former Minister of Tourism; Assembly member Viviana Bonilla and former Assembly member Christian Viteri, who are both fugitives.
The provision also applies to 10 businessmen who participated in the illegal award of contracts with the State, through the delivery of money.
It should be noted that former Vice President Jorge Glas is in Latacunga prison serving a six-year sentence, while Alexis Mera, former Legal Secretary of the Presidency, is under house arrest.
“During the course of this day, the corresponding offices are sent, both to the General Commander of the Police, and to the Chief of the Judicial Police, for their immediate location and capture; such authorities must inform this Court in order to proceed with issuing the constitutional imprisonment ballots, ”the brief details.
In addition, it provides that the Ministry of Finance stop paying life pensions to former President Correa, who received $ 4,226, while former Vice President Jorge Glas received $ 4,057.
And that the immediate transfer of Alexis Mera be made, from his home in Guayaquil, to the Latacunga jail, the same prison where Glas is.
He also ordered that the National Electoral Council (CNE) be notified of the loss of rights to political participation to those sentenced for the time of their sentence. That is, eight years for the majority of convicts.
On this last point, the National Assembly is informed about the legal status of Assemblywoman Viviana Bonilla for the loss of her position.
Other provisions
The Court, through the brief, ordered that the State Attorney General’s Office must send an account number so that the sentenced persons, within a period of no more than 30 days, cancel the economic reparation that amounts to $ 14.7 million.
For this, a notification will be issued to the Property and Commercial Registries for the confiscation of assets.
Regarding the economic reparation measures, the Court will set a date for those sentenced to comply with a public apology in the Plaza de la Independencia. In addition, they will have to place a plaque with the phrase:
“Public resources must always be honestly administered. Public service is nothing more than a service to the community subject to the principles of ethics ”.
The ruling also provided for a 300-hour course on secular ethics and transparency that the 20 defendants must comply with, was delegated to the Prosecutor’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office for their organization.
