Criminal Chamber Dismissed Emilio Palacio’s Appeal

The Second Criminal Chamber of the Court of Guayas, office in charge of the trial of El Universo case, yesterday ordered the execution of the sentence imposed on former columnist of El Universo Newspaper Emilio Palacio.

The court rejected the annulment and pleading appeal filed by Palacio’s lawyers, because Palacio and his lawyers did not attend court on September 16 and 20, days set for the hearing of Diario El Universo case.

Palacio’s lawyer, Jorge Alvear, submitted a cassation appeal yesterday. Vera Alembert, one of the lawyers of President Rafael Correa, said “because his appeal was abandoned there is no legal basis for the appeal.” (AV)
