Crucial week for the demand of a gay couple

Last Friday, inside the hearing room of the third criminal chamber of guayas was analyzed the action of protection raised by Roberto Herrera and Érick Pillasagua, who in fact maintain a union in Santa Cruz, Galápagos province.

They have waited about two years for a judgement, after they filed a complaint based on article 68 of the current Constitution, which proposes that two people engaged in al lawful union, have the same rights as those who have contracted marriage.

After the hearing that took place last Friday, LGBTI activists (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex) that were present waited for the initial sentence to be ratified.

“With this case we stand before a discrimination. The exercise of a constitutional right in relation to a condition or a personal reality of a couple is being  discriminated”, explained the national director of protection protection of the Ombudsman, in that province, José Luis Guerra.

It is expected that this week the Chamber in charge of this lawsuit will give resolution to this case that occurred days after the judgment against the former candidate Nelson Zavala, who lost his political rights by alleged homophobic statements.
