Director of the Washington Post says he feels honored with the criticism from Venezuela and Ecuador
Director of the Washington Post, Martin Baron, said today that the problems of press freedom in countries like Venezuela, Ecuador and Argentina are “a warning call” and said he carries as medals of honor the criticism of Presidents Rafael Correa and late Hugo Chavez.
“What is happening in Latin American countries like Venezuela or Ecuador is a wake-up call” for journalists, said Baron at a news conference at the Center for Studies CSIS of Washington, he was accompanied by Ricardo Kirschbaum, editor of the Argentine daily Clarin, and Miguel Henrique Otero, of the Venezuelan daily El Nacional.
Baron acknowledged that his newspaper can not make a coverage about what happens in Latin America as he would like, but they have written and positioned themselves frontally from the editorial pages.
“And since we have suffered criticism and attacks, for example from Rafael Correa (Ecuadorian president) or Hugo Chavez (president of Venezuela from 1999 to 2013) we carry them as medals of honor,” he said.
