Earthquake victims living on the highways to get help
A plastic awning attached to four sticks protects Jefferson Alvarez from the strong sunlight, while he waits sitting on the edge of the Pedernales-El Carmen highway. People who pass by give him water and food.
Beside him, a dozen of affected people by the earthquake of April 16 awaiting for the same, stationed in seven tents made of broken plastic, sticks and cane.
At least there are 5 of these “shelters,” one is called God´s Love, which was installed 15 km from El Carmen highay, 90 km from Pedernales.
In his last weekly address, President Rafael Correa referred to the people sheltered at the foot of the highway.
And Wednesday afternoon at a worktable of the Committee for Emergency Operations (COE), officials of the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES) spoke of undertaking a collection of socioeconomic data to determine the status of these people in order to assist them.
