Ecuador and Colombia create a commission against migrant trafficking
Colombia and Ecuador agreed Wednesday to create a binational commission to prosecute traffickers of migrants, “a scourge” that affects the region and sparks “concern” in both governments.
“We created a binational commission with the Security Ministry of Ecuador and the Defence Ministry of Colombia) to find and fight against those traffickers who are the major culprits of the situation faced by many migrants” that cross Latin America bound for the United States, said Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin.
Holguin and her Ecuadorean counterpart Guillaume Long met in the Colombian border town of Ipiales to address the migrants transit between the two countries and issues on land transport.
In recent weeks, Colombia has faced a migration crisis product of the mass arrival of irregular migrants who use Ecuador as one of the main starting points on their way to Central America, with the United States as the final destination.
