Ecuador and Colombia hold talks after drug operation on the border

The foreign ministries of Ecuador and Colombia spoke out after a drug operation by the Ecuadorian military forces in the border sector ‘ La Hormiga ‘, in Sucumbíos. The statements were released on the night of Saturday, July 29, 2023.

According to Ecuadorian authorities, the operation was programmed and carried out in national territory.

The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry assured that the operation was scheduled and was carried out in national territory. “…regarding an anti-drug operation carried out by forces of the Ecuadorian Army in the border sector of ‘La Hormiga’, province of Sucumbíos, in national territory, duly scheduled within the framework of activities to combat drug trafficking on the northern border.”

He also maintained that “cordial conversations” are being held with the Colombian authorities to settle any situation that may exist regarding the operation.

For its part, the Colombian Foreign Ministry explained that diplomatic and military channels were activated. In addition, dialogue mechanisms remain open between the authorities of both countries.
