Ecuador celebrates The Day of the Death and Cuenca’s Independence
The remembrance of the dead and the celebration of the independence of Cuenca mobilizes thousands of Ecuadorians traveling to visit their dead relatives in cemeteries and to attend the celebrations of the third-most important city, which offers civic and artistic performances.
Since early yesterday, hundreds of families and friends visited the graves of their loved ones to avoid the crowds from each year in the traditional Day of the Death, which is evoked today.
In the General Cemetery of Guayaquil, blocks of vaults were decorated with colorful natural and synthetic flowers hung at the height of the headstones. The scene was repeated in all the cemeteries in the country and today it is expected that the visits increase.
Today and tomorrow officers from the Transit Commission and National Police will be distributed in several cemeteries to control the movement of people.
In each city there are scheduled cultural events both in cemeteries, where guitarists groups offer their melodies to the deceased, as in public settings where regional governments have organized shows for locals and visitors.
