Ecuador seeks to dialogue with Sweden on Assange situation
Ecuador expressed on November 13 to Sweden “the necessity to maintain a constructive dialogue,” according to the “principles of sovereignty and independence of powers,” on the case of the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, asylee in the Ecuadorian embassy in London and required by the Swedish law.
Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino received in Quito Marie Andersson de Frutos, Ambassador of Sweden concurrent in Ecuador, whom he reiterated the importance Ecuador assigned to the case of Assange, informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to an official statement, it was “firmly stated the legal grounds for the granting of asylum, as well as the traditional position of Ecuador with regards to human rights.” And “it concluded that the immobilism undermines the human rights of all those involved in this sensitive case, particularly against Assange.”
