Ecuadorian Banana Could be Purchased by Cuba and Venezuela
Ecuadorian government confirmed the interests that Cuba and Venezuela had about the acquisition of banana surplus from small producers which the regime proposed to buy from, but this decision could lead to losses.
In order to purchase the fruit, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAGAP) has two plans: one is that the National Storage Unit (UNA for its Spanish acronym) could acquire the product from the exporter to pay it to the producer or that UNA could request exporters to prepare the product for exportation.
It has been taken into consideration the shipping of the product to programs of the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES for its Spanish acronym) to support school feeding projects and to feed the livestock with the shipment of the product purchased since it will be used as animal food.
The government is considering extending five more weeks the emergency in the banana sector that was established last August 18. (BG)
