Ecuadorian bananas will have a sectorial mark

Posted On 17 May 2017

Ecuadornews:

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador signed an agreement for the development and implementation of the sectoral brand ‘Banano del Ecuador.’ The country annually produces about 7.5 million metric tons of fruit, making it the first banana exporting country as it contributes with 29% of the world’s supply, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The use of the brand will demand those who work in the banana sector quality, social responsibility, environmental care, innovation and market diversification.

The undersecretary of Foreign Trade Services Maria Antonieta Reyes explained that the sectorial brand aims to provide the product with greater competitiveness and presence. She explained: “we want that Ecuador keeps transcending because Ecuadorian bananas are of premium quality.” Only in 2016, the banana sector exported 2,655 million dollars, placing the fruit as the first non-oil export commodity. The main buyers of Ecuadorian bananas are Russia (21.4%), the United States (15.5%), Germany (12.3%), Italy (6.3%), Argentina (3.9%), Belgium (3.3%), China (3.2%) and Japan (2.8%).
