Ecuadorian cyclist is in a coma after crashing in Argentina

Camilo Garcia Granda, 16, of Quito, suffered an accident last Monday while participating in BMX Pan American Championship, in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Now he’s in a coma and his future is in the hands of a committee of doctors in the regional hospital Ramon Carrillo, of Salta.
The national athlete represented Ecuador in the qualifying rounds of the BMX Pan American Championship when he suffered an accident that caused him to hit his head and chest on the ground.
Luis Fernando Garzon, the athlete’s uncle, said the cyclist’s mother, Dominique Granda, traveled with his sister Pamela to be with his son, whom they saw yesterday. He said that the Sports Minister Ecuador, Jose Francisco Cevallos offered his help.
The doctors who are attending the athlete stated that his condition is delicate since the fall has affected the lungs and he also suffers from an encephalic cranial trauma.
In Tumbaco, Quito, family, friends and classmates attended a mass to pray for health and speedy recovery of the cyclist, known as El Gringo.
