Ecuadorian government limits the IACHR
Most members of the Organization of American States (OAS) would be meeting in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on Friday, March 8. Yesterday the Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said that there is a media campaign against the reforms to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
The controversy of the president against the Commission is due to the precautionary measures that the human rights body decided to carry out in Ecuador, at the time, because the cases of El Universo newspaper for alleged libel accusations, also the journalist Emilio Palacios, head of the article opinion “No to the lies“, and the case of the book the Big Brother.
Now Rafael Correa seeks “a Rapporteur: competition for funding. Although the United States is not a signatory to the American Convention on Human Rights (ACHR) is one of the main contributors to work the Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression. This issues an annual report on how the subject is in each of the countries. Ecuador has been the one leading the critics. He said that this Office should not have special funding, but should come from the same OAS. The other rapporteurs do not have that benefit.”
“New rules for precautionary measures. Precautionary measures or protective rules apply when a person or group believes that the justice of his country does not give sufficient guarantees and protects you. For the country, has questioned whether these are given, arbitrarily and without that there is supposedly a real reason for that,” pointed out the head of state.
