El Universo: “No one can take away our right to inform,” says Carlos Perez

“El Universo will continue to work, reporting freely as it has been doing it in these first 90 years,” said Carlos Perez, director of El Universo Newspaper during the press conference with the official statement on the judge’s 15 temporary court of Criminal Guarantees.
“The sentence against El Universo seeks to shut us up,” said its director. With this decision of the Judge Juan Paredes, “he wants our hands to shake when we write about an act of corruption or even worse, self-censorship,” said the editor of the Guayaquil Newspaper sentenced to pay a millionaire bill and 3 years in prison and for their former columnist (Palacio) and its three main executives.”No one can take away our right (to inform), not even nation leaders,” said Carlos Pérez, he added that Correa’s trial against El Universo is not an attack against the newspaper but against Ecuadorians.
“If President Rafael Correa is not interested in money, why did his lawyer announce that he will appeal the sentence? Furthermore, the company is included in the trial when a legal person has no will or conscience,” said chief of the Journal.
