Electoral absenteeism decreased a 11.8%

The Figures of voters registered nationwide that did not vote since the 2004 elections until 2014, showed a reduction of 11.8 percentage points.
The curve adopts a further decline in the last two elections. The Member of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Nubia Villacis, attributed part of the reduction to the change and updating of electoral domicile program. From 2013 to 2014, the institution changed and updated the domicile of approximately 2.5 million Ecuadorians. The aim is to approach the polling stations to the citizens who previously had to travel from the city to remote areas or vice versa to vote.
The same plan was extended to the Ecuadorians living abroad. According to the Minister, about 300,000 compatriots are registered abroad, an estimated of 1.5 millions who live outside the country. This fact evidence that a large number of Ecuadorians are still comprised as voters in the local registry, which is reflected in the high level of absenteeism from provinces recognized as sources of migrants.
