The growth identified in the electronic modality is the result of the first measurement study aimed at companies and customers to assess the impact of COVID-19 on the country’s e-commerce during quarantine and post-quarantine.
Restriction of mobility and fear of contagion, that is, external factors, are the reasons for the increase, according to the study. This indicates that the growth was not produced by voluntary adoption of the consumer.
The question then revolves around what will happen once the pandemic is overcome. According to the results, the trend of increase will continue.
The study also indicated that the most used channel for this type of business was the free WhatsApp application and that the most requested products have been food and beverages, medicines and prepared food , three sectors that were the laggards in transactions before the pandemic. digital.
The most used forms of payment have been credit and debit cards, although there was also a significant increase in the use of the electronic wallet, bitcoin and the QR code.
The preference for the digital channel affected the traditional channel, Dakduk said. The study carried out in 126 companies showed that this form of trade was the only option that companies had to continue operating.
However, they reported a 56% decrease in sales . This reduction is related to the increase in unemployment, the scarcity of resources and the disinterest in the products they sell.
The study also points out that the purchases were made in national portals, which represents an opportunity to consolidate its position in the Ecuadorian market. (I)
