Emilio Palacio can return home at any time, says Correa on Twitter
President Correa reacted today, trough his Twitter account, on the situation of Ecuadorian journalist Emilio Palacio, self exiled in Miami. The President referred to the alleged persecution of Palacio as “another major fabrication.” “Emilio Palacio can return home whenever he wants”.
Deputy Foreign Minister Marco Albuja also reacted on Twitter. Yesterday he said that “it is a pity that Palacios is not in the country in order to grant him safe conduct to which he is entitled.” Albuja also wrote: “Palacio has NO custody order so he can come today.”
Palacio fled to Miami after being convicted along with other executives of El Universo to three years in prison and ordered to pay $ 40 million following a complaint filed by President Rafael Correa.
Palacio said yesterday at a press conference said “the asylum was granted in August 17, a day after the Ecuadorian government granted asylum to Julian Assange”, Wikileaks’ founder. (FL)
