Especial Investigation Team will work on the Restrepo brothers case
Jose Serrano, Ecuadorian Interior Minister, said on Sunday that he will form a special team to investigate the disappearance of the Restrepo brothers after being arrested by the police in January 1988.
The Restrepo brothers were imprisoned without legal justification, tortured and murdered by agents of the Ecuadorian police and their bodies were dumped, possibly in Yambo Lagoon.
“This case will be closed only when we recover the bodies, the bones, the remains of the Restrepo brothers. This is a page in history that is pending,” said Serrano.
“If we have to empty Yambo to find the bodies of Andres and Santiago, we will empty it if necessary,” said President Rafael Correa after expressing his admiration for the Restrepo family. “I have also ordered the Minister of Interior to reopen the investigations, and to offer a substantial reward, 200,000, $ 250,000 for those who give accurate indications of the whereabouts of the Restrepo brothers, a part of what happened because what happened is completely known” Correa said.
