EU and Cuba are close to sign a relations agreement
The European Union (EU) and Cuba closed yesterday, August 28 in Brussels, with “substantial progress,” its second round of negotiations to normalize their relations, explained to the press the European Chief Negotiator, Christian Leffler.
The first phase of the negotiations was in May and was devoted to political dialogue. However, these two days of negotiations in Brussels were focused instead on various areas such as social issues or safety, environmental or agricultural issues, including human rights and fundamental rights, said the head.
“On both sides, there is a very positive and pragmatic compromise” Leffler explained. There is in “Cubans a recognition of our main concerns, including governance issues of fundamental rights,” which presents Cuba because the “economy and society are controlled by the state.”
