Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld spoke about what happened at the Mexican Embassy
In an interview for Teleamazonas, the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, referred to the events that occurred last weekend, from the arrest of former Vice President Jorge Glas, to the reactions that this has generated. The official explained that on repeated occasions the legal situation of Glas was made known, a person with an executed sentence, on conditional release and who had to appear weekly in front of the judges.
“As a diplomatic channel, we sent all the documentation that had to be delivered, what justified it. Not only that it justified that it demonstrated, through the Court of Justice, what the situation was of the then guest and later asylum seeker so that it did not proceed,” indicated the Chancellor.
However, Minister Sommerfeld assured that despite this there was no positive response and that, from Mexico, they indicated that they were analyzing the case. To this would be added information that President Daniel Noboa received warning of the possible escape of the former vice president.
“The first to begin to breach several articles of the Vienna Convention and diplomatic asylum is Mexico,” stated the Chancellor, adding that the Mexican government not only interfered in the Ecuadorian justice system, “but also with comments to delegitimize free elections.” democratic, transparent and painful that Ecuador had months ago.”
Thus, by granting political asylum to Jorge Glas, Mexico would have disrespected article 1 of the Montevideo Convention of 1933, which indicates that “it is not lawful for States to grant asylum (…) to those accused of common crimes who were prosecuted in a formal manner.” or that they had been convicted by ordinary courts.” In addition, article 3 of the Caracas Convention warns that “it is not lawful to grant asylum to people who, at the time of requesting it, are accused and processed early.”
And this would be what Ecuador’s diplomatic team will explain in the meeting that will take place at the OAS this Tuesday, April 9, 2024. To do this, information will be provided commenting on what happened “we must tell the story of Ecuador, we must tell the real facts of Ecuador,” the official reiterated.
Regarding solving the diplomatic situation with Mexico, he indicated that both parties must sit down to talk and put on the table the mistakes made by both countries and that both were affected by non-compliance. However, he reminded Ecuador that the statements of the president of Mexico question the legitimacy of the last elections.
However, he indicated that the country is willing to sit down with the government of Andrés López to resolve this impasse. “We are always open to strengthening relationships,” highlighted Gabriela Sommerfeld.
Regarding the Ecuadorian embassy in Mexico, it confirmed that it will be closed, however the consulates in Mexico City and Monterey remain open. Regarding the Popular Consultation, he indicated that for the moment they will be held, but that the situation is being analyzed and what will be decided through official channels will be confirmed to the approximately 1,500 registered voters.
Finally, regarding the statements of former President Rafael Correa and his request for sanctions for Ecuador, he indicated that “it is sad to see that at this time he is leading a campaign to destroy Ecuador before the world.”
