Assemblyman Abdala Bucaram Pulley said that his father, the former President Abdala Bucaram Ortiz, would run as a candidate for the PRE political party in the next elections to be held in Ecuador in 2013.

However, the assemblyman explained, during a press conference, that so far it is not yet defined whether he will be running for the president or assemblyman candidacy.

Bucaram Pulley explained that his father can be nominated, because according to the new Constitution, one is not allowed as a candidate if there is a final judgement, which is not the case of the former president.

Regarding the estimated date of his return, Bucaram posted on his Twitter account: “It will be not later than April 2013. Unless they break the law…”

Bucaram was president of Ecuador from August 10, 1996 and he was dismissed on February 7, 1997.
