Last Tuesday, was auctioned in New York a triptych of British artist Francis Bacon for $ 142.4 million after six minutes of intense bidding in the room and by phone, thus becoming the most expensive artwork in the world.
The work entitled “Three Studies of Lucian Freud,” of the figurative artist from the twentieth century, was sold by Christie’s after being auctioned for the first time. The bet started with a price of $ 80 million and was temporarily halted to $ 126 million.
The auction of this piece exceeded the previous pictorial record of $ 119.9 million achieved by the iconic work “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, sold by rival auction house Sotheby’s in New York in May 2012.
The buyer’s identity was not disclosed. The previous record for a work of Bacon was 86 million dollars in 2008.
