“Fukushima’s Heroes” Received Prince of Asturias Award
“Fukushima’s Heroes,” men and women who worked in the nuclear emergency caused by the tsunami that hit Japan last March 11, received today the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord 2011 for their “courageous and exemplary behavior.”
The jury praised the “calm and selfless response to the whole Japanese society since the events of March 2011, which had its highest expression in the groups of people let that selfless to a self-sacrifice heroic degree, they risked their lives” said the jury, which also noted that “when addressing the striken central problems and their environment and tasks, they avoided a human tragedy and larger environment disaster, giving the world an example of courage in adversity, sense of duty, common wellness and civic awareness.”
More than 40 nominations from 20 nations, including the World Youth Day (WYD), opted for this award which is the last of eight international awards held every year by the Prince of Asturias Foundation.
