The Galapagos Governing Council reminded establishments that offer tourist accommodation in the archipelago that they can remain open to “provide their services to visitors who are still on the islands .”
This is due to the state of emergency that governs the entire country, to curb contagions of the covid-19 , and which includes -among various measures- the cancellation of internal flights and tourist and passenger transport services .
Through a statement, which was published yesterday, Wednesday, March 18, 2020, this body indicated that this activity can operate “unless the administration of the establishment decides to close operations .”
The Santa Cruz cantonal Emergency Operations Committee ( COE ) also recalled that the temporary suspension of all category 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 establishments operating in the canton was ordered .
These are tolerance centers, bars , bars , karaokes , billiards , biscuits , discos , cafes , soda fountains , sports fields , warehouses and liquor stores , restaurants and video game rooms . “Establishments that do not meet this categorization should not close public attention on that island,” said the COE.
Disinfection efforts to prevent further coronavirus infections are also carried out in the insular region.
The Galapagos Biosecurity and Quarantine Regulation and Control Agency ( ABG ) reported that this day was completed yesterday, Wednesday, March 18, 2020 on the island of San Cristóbal.
Through its Twitter account , this entity indicated that 110 gallons mixed with chlorine were used to fumigate various sectors of San Cristóbal Island, such as streets , roads and the boardwalk .
This activity, indicated the Agency, was organized by the National Cantonal Emergency Operations Committee ( COE ) and carried out by ABG with the support of the Ministry of Health , firefighters and the local government of San Cristóbal.
Jorge Carrión , biologist and former director of the Galapagos National Park , commented that the inputs used for fumigation on the islands do not represent a danger to protected species , which even transit through these areas.
The entrance to the Galapagos National Park and Marine Reserve is totally restricted for visitors, since last Monday, March 16, 2020.
