Since 15 days ago are grown cucumbers that reach one metre in length and weigh 25 pounds, in America Luz parish, at 25 km of the route Santo Domingo – Quevedo.
The gardens are part of the food sovereignty project, which seeks to motivate the community to take their own orchards into their homes and other places in the parish.
But it has caught the attention of giant cucumbers. According to Abelardo Mejia, technician who began the planting of this variety, a friend of him brought the seed from a sector of the Amazon where the plant grows up to 60 cm. Here it took six months to reach 80 to 100 cm, said the coach.
So far are four first giant cucumbers harvested in America Luz. Two of them were prepared in a salad that yielded 20 servings. The other two are preserved until dry to obtain again the seeds and plant them.
