Google Commemorates Scientist Marie Curie

The search engine Google celebrates today Polish scientist Marie Curie’s 144 anniversary with a “doodle” on its international home page.Curie made several scientific discoveries including natural radioactivity as well as techniques for the isolation of radioactive isotopes and the discovery of two elements: polonium and radium. She was also the first woman to teach at the University of Paris and to be awarded two Nobel Prizes.She received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 for her pioneering studies on radiation and X rays, and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry “in recognition of her services in the advancement of chemistry by the discovery of the radium and polonium elements, the isolation of radium and study of the nature and compounds of this element.”
The Internet company represented Curie’s work with an image, she appears above Google’s logo surrounded by test tubes and chemical tools. Researchers such as Thomas Edison, Gregor Mendel and Albert Szent Györgyi have also been featured in the famous Google doodle.
