Government of Ecuador will not Give Interviews to Private For-Profit Media

Press Secretary, Fernando Alvarado, confirmed today that the Government of Ecuador will not grant interviews to private for-profit media and invited the “opposition” press to reject the government advertising.

Alvarado said the decision of not to giving interviews to private media is “a consequence of the political discourse of the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, and officials of the Government towards the project, and to choose which media are officials and which are not”, as stated in the website of the official El Ciudadano newspaper.

The secretary criticized television channels such as Ecuavisa or Teleamazonas, and newspapers such as El Universo, which, in his opinion, when those media invite someone from the opposition “they give all the space to speak of anything against the regime.”

According to Alvarado, when these media receive a public official “they do not give the oficial, the opportunity to report on the work being done.”

Alvarado assured that government officials will be held accountable to the public through other spaces driven by the Government or the Ministry of Communication “and without intermediaries such as journalists working for private media who seek to misrepresent and not to inform” (MZ)
