Government plans a subway system for Guayaquil
The current governor of Guayas and pre-candidate for Mayor of Guayaquil, Viviana Bonilla, announced the possible construction of a metro system which is going to work in parallel with the Metrovía.
The construction of the project, confirmed yesterday by the Minister of Transport, Maria de los Angeles Duarte, is estimated to start in a few years. It will be an outside tram due to the complications of the soil conditions and proximity to the river.
“The metro system of Guayaquil is absolutely feasible and it will be implemented,” said Duarte.
The director of the National Transit Agency, said that this new transportation system can “coexist” as an alternative to the Metrovía, that currently operates with three trunks and soon with four.
Duarte added that the work does not necessarily depend on PAIS political party’s victory in the next elections.
