Greece Starts a New Round of Protests
To each new twist in the economic ground in the government of Athens, the Greek society responds with greater mobilizations in the streets. Under this atmosphere of social tension sparked by the prime minister, George Papandreou, who yesterday claimed that the country can not be prisoner of protests, Greece lives today the first of two consecutive days of a general strike to protest against the economic adjustments.
There have been major riots at the gates of Parliament on Syntagma Square, the final destination of the strike.
Police said the protest through central Athens was attended by over 125,000 people in a country of 11 million inhabitants. With its convening power, today’s demonstration has become the most successful of the numerous protests held in the country since the outbreak of the crisis after the overflow of Greece’s problems in the debt markets.
