New Touchscreen Technology Enhances Mobility
A group of scientists from the Natural Interaction Group at Microsoft has created a new technology called “OmniTouch“.
This technology, which is still in experimental stage, can take advantage of the volume of real-world surfaces to use as touch screens, such as a wall could be used as a large touchscreen.
“By using all these surfaces and when we need it, we would benefit from all the advantages of mobility, while increasing the area of interactive user activity,” said scientist Hrvoje Benko.
The “OmniTouch” technology is based on Kinect cameras (a Microsoft company) used in the Xbox 360 video game consoles but has been modified to operate at shorter distances. In addition, OmniTouch uses a calibrated projector to communicate with the Camera in order to allow light pulses to be transferred from the surface to the camera and from the camera to the computer, smartphone or tablet to which it is connected.
