Gulf States Supply Arms to Syrian Rebels
According to the US Senator, John McCain, the armed rebels that fight against the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are being supplied with weapons by some regional countries, including Saudi Arabia. McCain wants that the US follow the lead.
McCain was arguing that the United States should support the Syrian opposition with arms despite the concerns over the presence of extremist forces among the anti-Assad groups.
Syrian rebel groups receive funding from the Gulf monarchies. Such money is being used to break the fighting by receiving more and better weapons. At the moment clashes between the warring parties occur every day.
The UN believes that the 15-month conflict has claimed the lives of at least 10,000 people. However some opposition groups in Syria state that the real number is over 14,000. (AV)
