HRW calls for concrete solutions to HR abuses in Venezuela
José Miguel Vivanco, Americas Director of the human rights organization Human Rights Watch, sent a letter to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay requesting them to urge the government of Nicolas Maduro to address “immediately the grave situation of human rights in the country.”
The organization requested this Thursday on the Member States of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) to end its silence on human rights abuses that are being committed in Venezuela.
“While various international organizations, including human rights rapporteurs of the United Nations and the European Parliament have expressed concern about human rights violations in Venezuela, Unasur has not condemned the serious abuses committed by Venezuelans state agents” claimed Vivanco.
Although Vivanco considered “a good initiative” the mediator role of Unasur, he regretted that his intervention had not resulted “in concrete results to improve the situation of human rights in the country.”
