Hugo Chavez, childhood and adolescence of the president in pictures

The man who ran for fourteen years a project called “Socialism of the XXI Century“, dies as a reelected president in midst of the flattery of his followers, who praised the public and social policies of the Government, and the criticisms of his detractors, who accused him of disrespect political rights and freedoms.

Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias, born in July 28, 1954 in Sabaneta de Barinas, in the plains of Venezuela, was the son of a couple of elementary school teachers -Hugo de los Reyes Chavez and Elena Frias-, and the second of six brothers.

His Indian grandmother, Rosa Ines Chavez, took care of the two older brothers, and it was she who taught little Hugo how to read and write, while the child helped the family finances by selling sweets (papaya made), known as “spiders“. So he was known as the “Spiderer” (arañero) of Sabaneta.
